MeRT is the name given to a revolutionary form of neuromodulation. The therapy is grounded on the information gained from patient’s individual EEG/ECG data to create an individualized program of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to deliver targeted and personalized treatment with improved outcomes.

MeRT therapy is:

  • Patient-specific
  • Non-invasive
  • Non-pharmaceutical

How does it work?

Neurometric examination is performed on EEG data to individualize Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) protocols for each patient. The growing database of EEG images allows us to outstandingly tune precision treatment protocols. We analyze brainwave activities and their connection to the heart which delivers an understanding into the strengths and opportunities for improvement of each brain that we monitor. Different neurological issues warrant different treatment parameters, and this assessment procedure permits us to determine precision settings for neuromodulation based on each patient’s brain.

Who is it for?

MeRT has been applied to a range of developmental and sensory processing challenges. These are often Labelled or labeled under the following diagnosis:

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

TBI / Concussion

Addiction / Substance abuse

Chronic pain

Post TBI / Stroke

Chronic fatigue syndrome

Eating Disorders

Cerebral palsy* (has helped with spasticity)

Parkinson’s Disease*

Alzheimer’s Dementia*

It may also be used for people looking to improve sports and corporate performance.

*MeRTsm will not cure the underlying condition but can assist with treating the symptoms of the condition

How do I know if I qualify?

There are some contraindications to the treatment which means that it would not be advisable to start treatment. Some of these include ANY implanted devices in your head, schizophrenia, high risk seizure or active substance abuse.

There may be exceptions, but you will need to discuss your condition with a clinician.

Below is a complete list of absolute contraindications to our treatment for cortical MeRT treatment:

Vagal Nerve Stimulator

VP Shunt/ Magnetic intracranial shunts

Deep Brain Stimulator implant

Epidural Cortical stimulator

Steel shunts/stents/filters

Cranial metal fragments (ie shrapnel, excluding titanium)

Aneurysm clips, coils, pipeline flow diversion

Cochlear implant

Pregnant or breast feeding

Primary or metastatic brain cancer (unless palliative treatment brain cancer)

Magnetic dental implant

Ocular implants

Relative contraindications (requiring closer protocol attention, but not disqualifying someone from receiving cortical MeRTsm treatment):

History of Seizure or seizure disorder

Titanium shunts/stents

Spinal Cord Stimulator

Hearing aids

Magnetic ink tattoo

Bipolar Disorder Type 1&2

Baha Implant Absolute

Absolute contraindications for peripheral MeRT, Include all cortical MeRT treatment contraindications:

Cochlear implant

Vagal Nerve Stimulator

Steel screws or hardware (contraindicated for placement over ferrous material)

Any implanted electrical device

Pregnant or breast-feeding

Urogenital implants

Ferrous implants

IVC Filters

Pain pumps

What kind of results (improvements, changes, etc.) do patients usually see?

Functional recovery is the primary objective of treatment. Results are individual in nature, depending on the initial presenting symptoms.

Common benefits of functional recovery include:

Increased sleep quality

Increased sleep duration

Increased attention span

Increased sociability

Increased motivation

Increased concentration and focus

Increased emotional stability

Increased ability to adapt to change

Improvement in clarity of thought

Improvement in mood

Decreased cravings (e.g. drugs and alcohol)

Improved self-confidence and self-esteem

Reduction of anxiety

Reduction of pain

Is treatment covered by insurance?

The device that we use has been FDA cleared for treatment of major depression, at this stage we are using it off-label for the additional indications that we treat. Our parent company, Brain Treatment Center, has treated over 1,000 ASD patients and over 5,000 patients in total across the board.

During your initial intake consultation, a Patient Care Coordinator will discuss any questions you may have regarding costs, payments, and reimbursements. MIND ALGN does not accept insurance, however we can provide a superbill at the completion of treatment for patients to submit to their insurance provider.
